Before You Colour

Take Care...

Smart Beauty colouring products are extremely simple to use, but there are some precautionary measures you can take to guarantee beautiful results.

Follow the recipe. Make sure you read and re-read all the instructions in your Smart Beauty product kit before you begin application - as much care should be taken when dying your hair as there should be to cooking a 3 course meal.  Be sure to select the application method that is best suited to you.

Stop being so sensitive! Always carry out a strand test and the skin sensitivity/allergy test and strand test, detailed //HYPERLINK//here, 48 hours before colouring. Remember to clean the brushes and tray thoroughly afterwards.

I'm not out to hurt you! It is essential that you perform the skin test every time, no matter how many times you have previously coloured your hair, even using the same product. Chemicals in hair dyes can, without warning, sensitise your body meaning that an allergic reaction could occur next time you are exposed to hair colourants.  Preventions is ALWAYS better than cure.

Have you thought about your ex recently? Consider your hair-colour relationship history. If you already have colour on your hair, this is likely to affect the results.

Wear protection. All hair dye will stain most surfaces – protect clothing and furnishings from accidental staining, using old towels or sheets if possible and wear old clothes.  Remove all jewellery and use the protective gloves provided.

Get friendly. Get a friend to help you, especially if it is your first time or you have long hair.

ER (we wish it was advice from George Clooney);

  • If Smart Beauty products accidentally come into contact with the eyes, rinse the affected area in cold water and seek medical advice immediately.
  • If you experience any sensation of stinging or burning, wash the product off in cold water and seek medical advice immediately.

Handy hints

  • Don’t be rushed, take your time to achieve the optimum effect, beauty can't be rushed.
  • Hair colours work better in a warm room.
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the skin around the area to be coloured to avoid your skin staining.

What is your hair type?

Coloured hair:

Coloured hair has already been processed or possibly damaged and this may affect the results of further colour treatments. Definitely take this into consideration and perform a strand test before carrying out Smart Beauty hair colour.

Fine hair:

Fine hair is not necessarily thin hair, it is simply a way of describing the character of your hair, fine hair is often silky and smooth and generally hard to style and hold volume. When coloring, a shorter development time may be needed, but always go by your personal strand test development time for best results.

Normal hair:

Generally, normal hair is considered to be easy to style and is neither too thick or thin in texture, it will sometime have a natural wave. When coloring, an average development time may be needed, but always go by your personal strand test development time for best results.

Thick hair:

Thick hair is very coarse in texture and the owner of such a thick head of hair will generally have a lot of it. When coloring, a longer development time may be needed, but always go by your personal strand test development time for best results.

Caucasian hair:

This tends to be finer than other hair types. When coloring, an average development time may be needed, according to the results of your strand test. The palest shades of blonde are usually achievable.

Asian hair:

This tends to be thicker than Caucasian hair. When coloring, a longer development time may be needed, according to the results of your strand test. Black hair will not be able to be processed to the palest shades of blonde, although deeper shades of blonde are achievable.

Afro hair:

This tends to be thicker than Caucasian hair with a strong wave or tight curl. When coloring, a longer development time may be needed, according to the results of your strand test. Black hair will not be able to be processed to the palest shades of blonde, although deeper shades of blonde are achievable.  Be sure to check that Afro hair can withstand the processing of hair colour by performing a strand test.  Although Afro hair may appear strong, it is often even weaker than other hair types and is prone to breakage and dryness.

Permed/relaxed hair:

Permed or chemically relaxed hair will probably already be damaged and this may affect the results of further colour treatments. Take this into consideration and perform a strand test before carrying out Smart Beauty hair colour. Wait at least 2 weeks after treatments or perming or relaxing before colouring the hair.

Condition

Damaged hair is not able to take colour as well as hair in good condition so resulting colour could be patchy or uneven.  To improve the condition of your hair, it is wise to get your hair trimmed often to remove split ends and promote new growth.  Try to limit the amount of heat styling as this significantly affects the condition of you hair.  If you simply couldn't imaging parting with your beloved hair straighteners - make sure you use a heat protection spray every time you style.

Over-processed hair is weak and is at more risk of damage from the chemical colour treatments. We recommend deep-conditioning treatments especially through the mid-lengths and ends of hair up to a week before you use Smart Beauty hair colours.

A loss of condition is caused by the hair having a lack of protein and/or moisture, due to a range of causes such as over-processing through colour or styling treatments, heat damage, sun damage or use of harsh products. Test for loss of condition using the method below.

POST-COLOURING TEST – to check the post-treatment hair condition
  1. Place the damp strands between the forefingers and thumbs and pull. If the hair breaks easily then do not continue with full application.
  2. If the hair pulls apart easily and does not return, as with bubblegum, then do not proceed. If the hair gives a little and does not break then you may proceed.

Types of hair colour

Temporary colour
  • Temporary colour is made of dye molecules that adhere to the outer shaft of any hair type, but they do not penetrate the hair’s surface.
  • They can be washed out immediately after use.
  • Temporary spray colour will even wash out of pre-lightened hair (unless there is significant damage to the hair shaft).
  • The colours are vibrant and are perfect for creating high/lowlights of any colour you choose.

Smart Colour sprays include 17 shades and 3 glitter sprays.

Semi-permanent colour
  • Semi-permanent dyes add colour without changing your natural shade dramatically.
  • They deposit colour that clings to the hair’s surface but don’t permanently change your hair’s colour. The outer layer of colour builds up to add shine, condition and colour in one step.
  • The molecules of colour are small enough to wash out (approximately 6-12 washes), fading with each shampoo so there is no regrowth and no retouching is necessary.
  • Semi-permanents cover up to 50% of grey hair and enhance natural colour.
  • Semi-permanents should not be used on pre-lightened hair as results may become more permanent. To refresh the product, re-apply approximately every 4 weeks.

Smart Colour Semi Permanent

Demi-permanent colour

Demi-permanent colour is used in the same way as semi-permanent colour, but with longer-lasting results, adding condition, shine and body. Colour enhancement is subtle but notable, lasting up to 26 shampoos, with re-application every 4 to 6 weeks. There is no obvious regrowth because the colour fades gradually each time you wash. Although low levels of peroxide will lift colour to be a little brighter than the natural shade, demi-permanent dyes are gentle and will not reduce natural condition. Use on pre-lightened or permed hair may result in more permanent colouring.

Permanent colour

Permanent colour provides all-over, enduring colour with depth and intensity. The presence of ammonia enables hair to be lightened, and then peroxide allows colour pigments to penetrate the hair’s structure, irreversibly altering the pigmentation. The final shade result is a combination of your natural shade and tone, together with the chemical development time. It covers grey entirely, lighten hair by a number of shades and create tonal changes. Regrowth is obvious, so re-application is necessary every 4 to 6 weeks. Permanent hair products will eventually fade, but only to a lighter version of the permanent shade – not back to your original colour.
